Planning to become a special educator like the one who taught Priyanka Chopra's character in Barfi?
Here are some of the questions you need to ask yourself.
Do you enjoy working with children with special needs?
As a special educator, some of the types of disabilities you'll be working may include learning disabilities, speech or language impairments, mental retardation, multiple disabilities, hearing impairments, autism (autism spectrum). You need to figure it out whether you are comfortable in working with single or multiple disabilities.
Do you have the required certification/degree?
In order to deal with special education children, you need to have Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) or certificate course in remedial education or special education.
Are you comfortable doing paperwork?
You need to prepare IEPs (Individualized Educational Program), curricular modifications, referrals, progress reports because this is the only way to understand the improvement of the child.
Do you have patience?
The most importantly is “patience”. You need to figure out whether you have ample of patience to handle the issues of special children.
Are you able to develop good rapport with child’s family?
As a special educator, you are not only dealing with the child but also with the whole family. Thus it is important to be empathetic towards the family and be able to solve the misconceptions or doubts of the family members.
