Frequently asked questions during a law interview

National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) graduate Abhishek Dadoo speaks to Kabir Singh Bhandari about the kind of questions students should be prepared for when going for a law interview...

Question 1: Why do you want to join us and not xyz?

As a student, the answer to this question seemed quite simple; because you are willing to pay me money.

But that does not explain why not xyz, that’s simple too, xyz is not sitting in front of me right now, asking me these questions, if he was, I would probably say the same things to him.

If you identify with what I just said, chances are you not getting the job.

The most important thing to remember about the ‘why us’ question is that it’s not built to be only an ego massage for your prospective employer, it also highlights your interest in and knowledge about the firm/company, so prepare well.

Question 2: Why did you choose this field?

Honestly, I would rather have a seizure than to answer this with a straight face.

Some of the answers I had thought of included:

(i) I knew from an early age that I had a passion for law
(ii) I wanted to bring justice to the world
(iii) I got into law school
(iv) I wasn’t a big fan of calculus and I had heard law school has more girls than boys (and the truth shall set you free).

But honestly, please make up something better.

Abhishek Dadoo graduated from the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata and currently works with a reputed law firm in Mumbai as a financing and corporate lawyer.
