INTERVIEW: Scope of advertising

Ashita Agarwal believes that Advertising has immense scope. Here is her views about advertising field...

Tell us about yourself..

I completed my MSc in Marketing and Strategy from Warwick Business School, U.K. in September 2012. I had done a Bachelor of Mass Media from Sophia College, Mumbai. I also have two-year work experience in advertising with Bates India and Ogilvy and Mather (my current job).

Why did you go for a degree in Advertising?

I was always curious about the process which went behind the making of an ad.

I was fascinated by how the advertisements used to influence my peers, relatives and even me into preferring a certain brand over the others.

What parts of the course did you find challenging?

Our curriculum was designed to challenge us to go beyond our comfort zone. The task I found most challenging was to create a 20-minute documentary for a subject 'Contemporary Issues' .

My group had chosen to work on the 1982 Mill Strikes in Mumbai, and it was difficult to get interviews from relevant people. Our documentary turned out well and the effort was worth it!

What is the scope of advertising?

The scope of advertising is immense. As the business environment keeps changing, the scope keeps shifting too. For example, earlier television advertising was the most important in any campaign as it reached the maximum consumers at one go.

Now, no advertiser or marketer can leave out digital from their marketing plan.

How is advertising as a profession?

Advertising is a dynamic profession. But it's also a difficult one with lots of late nights and hard work, and only those will survive who are passionate about it.

What kind of a job can one look for after completing the course?

It depends on the individual's preference. Post BMM, one can join an advertising agency in creative, account management or planning department.

There is also choice between digital advertising or traditional advertising. One can even pursue a career in films. The opportunities are endless.

Any tips for students who want to join the advertising field?

There are good and bad parts to any profession. Enjoy the good ones, and don't worry about the bad!

What is the starting salary in advertising profession?

It depends on the kind of job, the agency, and also the negotiating skills of the   individual. The average starting salary is Rs 15,000 to Rs 18,000 per month.
