To be successful in the hotel management line, one needs to have three important skills. Of course, a three year degree in hotel management is a must for entry.
1. Paying attention to detail
Attention to detail is a must when one is a hotel manager. One needs to check whether the maids are cleaning the rooms on a regular basis and that the restaurant is following the correct hygienic conditions.
2. Communication skills
Being a hotel manager means communicating with all levels of employees working at the hotel and also the guests at the hotel. When talking to an employee about improving their work, one shall have to be careful not to sound too critical, which would get the morale of the employee down. You should be gentle and at the same time get the message across.
Also, as a manager you would be booking reservations for important guests and looking over the running of the hotel kitchen, for which your communication skills will need to be excellent to be able to converse well with everyone.
3. Good listener
Being a good listener is essential. You shall have to listen to all levels of employees and the guests regarding what they want from the hotel. If you end up ignoring what one of the guests had suggested then they might feel that the hotel is not interested in catering to their needs.
