IIT Delhi develops defence technology

The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) will help the Naval force to distinguish the difference between friendly and enemy submarines.

IIT-D is helping Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to develop new active sonar classifiers for Indian submarines.

IIT Delhi’s Professor Rajendra Bahl of Centre for Applied Research Electronics, along with Lt. Cdr Akshay R Prabhu and Professor Arun Kumar are working on the technology.

A technician from BEL is currently stationed at IIT Delhi. After the sonar system is developed, BEL will incorporate the new technology into the current one. The new sonar system is expected to go in for testing by the end of 2012.

The Centre for Applied Research Electronics at IIT Delhi has been working widely on defence-oriented projects. The department has been also training students from the Navy through master programs available at IIT Delhi. The department receives funding from the defence department for research projects.
