Careers after Class 12: Salaries for freshers

Students should consider their skills and interests while selecting a course after Class 12. It is also important that students have a realistic expectation of the salaries at a fresher’s level.
Salary is dependent on a number of factors. Students should realize that salary is dependent on a number of factors:
- Private companies usually pay more than government firms
- Metros pay more as cost of living is higher
- Firms pay better for institutes that are well known eg IIMs, IITs etc
- Students who make headlines for huge salaries usually have work experience
Engineering

Starting salary: Average range is Rs 2.5-5 lakh p.a (depends on institute. IITs: 4-5 lakh. Private engineering college just over Rs 3 lakh).
Medicine
Students should be aware that most students do a postgraduate degree after MBBS.

Starting salary: Rs 25,000 - Rs 35,000 each month (MBBS)
MBA
Students should realize that while MBA is offered by some institutes as a five-year course after 10+2, higher salaries are offered for those who have completed their bachelor’s with work experience.

Starting salary: Rs 3-12 lakh p.a. (depends on b-school)
Law

Starting salary: Salaries range between Rs 3 lakh as a judicial clerkship in a Supreme Court to salaries for over Rs 11 lakh a year in corporate firms.

Hotel Management
Consult a counsellor: Speak to a graduate of hotel management
Starting salary: Rs 10,000 - Rs 15,000, Rs 20,000 if you are a management graduate) and up to Rs 50,000 (for five stars)
