Courses after Class 12: Engineering

Students who have just finished their Class 12 have to make a decision as to which course they will be studying.
Engineering is a popular option available to students who have passed their CBSE, HSC or any other board for Class 12 in Science:
What is it: Engineering is a subject concerned with designing, building and using engines, machines and structures.
Eligibility: Students need to have taken Science in 10+2 with a Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics combination. You should only take engineering if you have a strong aptitude for Mathematics.
What you study: Depends on specialization. Usually Mathematics,
Entrance Exams: Almost all institutes have a national, state or own entrance exam. Most institutes enroll students on basis of IIT JEE, AIEEE, VITEEE among other exams. There is talk of one common entrance exam (ISEET) from 2013.

Salary for freshers: Depends on the institute you graduate from and marks obtained. Average range is Rs 2.5-5 lakh p.a (depends on institute. IITs: 4-5 lakh. Private engineering college just over Rs 3 lakh).
