Merchant Navy careers: Get paid in US dollars

Bhavya Kohli, director, International Maritime Institute, in Noida speaks about why the Merchant Navy is a good place to earn in US dollars, travel the world and get a lot of free time…

1. What skills does a student require to be a successful Merchant Seafarer?

A student needs to have basic problem solving skills, an eye for detail, decision making ability, problem solving capability, good communication skills.
Being athletic and having a good built are also key attributes. Apart from this he/she needs to be practical and adaptable, calm in emergencies, quick and efficient. I think it’s a matter of living in harmony with people, machines and the environment.

2. What are best parts of being the Merchant Navy?

You get tax free salaries in US dollars as well as large chunks of time off. Adventurous, interesting, challenging, industrious career are some keywords of being in the Merchant Navy.

About 90% of the world trade is carried out by shipping — if the merchant navy were to stop; half the world would starve and the other half would freeze.

3. What are the challenges of the job?

The biggest challenge is getting along with people you have never met before. There are people of various nationalities on a ship with language usually being a big barrier (these days most people speak English though), this is where your willingness to go outside your comfort zone will make a difference. Also, at sea, you are in a sense isolated.

You don't have the option to go to a warm home and "recharge your batteries". Everyone on a ship is qualified to be there and competent. You can work together to tackle big technical challenges.

4. What is a fresher’s salary?

Salaries are tax free. A fresher cadet has a salary package up to the range of USD 300 to 600 per month (approx Rs 16800-33,600).

After doing the basic apprenticeship, starting salaries are in the range of USD 1500-2500 a month (approx Rs 84,000-1,40,067).

Captains/Chief Engineers earn up to USD 10,000 – 20,000 per month (approx Rs 5,60,268 to 11,20,267).

5. What kind of firms will hire a Merchant Seafarer?

Some of recruiting partners at the International Maritime Institute include MSC, Anglo Eastern, Fleet Ship Mgt, Univan, V Ships, Zodiac, ID Shipping etc.
