You could be the next James Bond; straight out of campus

How do you feel about being a spy? Have you ever put yourself in the shoes of a James Bond or a Jason Bourne and dreamed of doing the things they do? What if you could be a spy straight out of college? If the plans being mooted fall in to place, this could very well be a reality soon.

A plan has been proposed to let intelligence agencies in the country go headhunting in university campuses.

Deputy national security advisor Nechal Sandhu — who spent decades in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) — was the first to propose the idea last year which was then vetted by a special team of experts set up by PM Manmohan Singh and then, earlier this year, by the home ministry too.

The country has two national intelligence agencies — the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research & Analysis Wing.

The proposal stresses on recruiting people with an aptitude for this “very different kind of work.”

There has been some opposition to the plan with some the law and personnel ministries arguing that campus recruitment from some universities would be unfair to youngsters in those left out. There are also reservations about how the agencies would be able to implement the 40.5% quota for SC, ST and OBCs.

Officers in the two agencies, however, are in favour of the proposal.
